VISAKHAPATNAM: At least 11 persons have been crushed to death after a crane collapsed at Hindustan Shipyard in Visakhapatnam.
The 70-tonne crane had undergone repairs and officials and operators were inspecting it when it fell, trapping several people, the police said.
Several people have been rushed to local hospitals, the police added.
Over 20 persons were working on the spot when the crane broke and fell on its side, crushing many workers.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy has directed Visakhapatnam District Collector and City Police Commissioner to take immediate action in the crane collapse incident.
Rescue efforts are underway, some workers are believed to be trapped under the collapsed crane.
Saturday’s incident is the third major mishap in the port city since May this year, when a gas leak in LG Polymers had led to 12 deaths.
