28-year-old Shobushi becomes first sumo wrestler to die of COVID-19

TOKYO: Shobushi, a 28-year-old sumo wrestler infected with coronavirus/COVID-19 has died, becoming the first sumo wrestler to die from the deadly virus, the Japan Sumo Association announced.

The wrestler, whose real name was Kiyotaka Suetake, who suffered from diabetes, was moved to an intensive care unit on April 19. He was diagnosed with coronavirus last month.

“We hope he will rest in peace now. We are very grateful to everyone in the medical institutes who treated him with utmost care”, the Japan Sumo Associations said.

Earlier this month, the sumo association cancelled the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament and changed the venue of its July 2020 tournament. It will now take place at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan behind closed doors.
