LUDHIANA, FEBRUARY 14: An eight-day hands-on-training workshop on “Assessment Methods for Soil Carbon and Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Agriculture” began at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) under the auspices of World Bank sponsored ICAR NAHEP-CAAST project on “Sustainable Natural Resource Management.” Delegates comprising scientists, research fellows and students from different states of the country are participating in this training workshop.
Inaugurating the workshop, Dr GK Sangha, Dean, Postgraduate Studies highlighted the importance of soil carbon and different management strategies for mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions.
Dr OP Choudhary, Head-cum-Principal Investigator of the project CAAST, welcomed the chief guest, experts and the delegates. Giving a brief introduction of the training programme, he informed that soil carbon dynamics may be better understood by isolating labile and non-labile pools of soil organic matter (SOM) by physical, chemical and biological techniques and measurement C fluxes in term of greenhouse gases (GHGs). A number of methods, with several variants, have been proposed to enumerate SOM pools. He further said that soil carbon sequestration and managing GHG emissions is central to moderate climate change effects and soil can act as a great carbon sink. However, for comparison of results among different studies and to develop repositories of soil C stocks at different levels of spatial aggregation, it is important to adopt standardized protocols for determining C pools and fluxes, he added.
On the first day, the expert Dr DK Benbi, Former ICAR National Professor, presented an overview of quantification of carbon sequestration in soil under different management practices.
This eight-day training programme has been divided into several sessions and each session will be dealing with pertinent issues related to the assessment of soil carbon and greenhouse gas emissions. A website on NAHEP-CAAST has also been launched in this opening session (www.nahep-caast-pau.in).
Later Dr GS Dheri, coordinator of this training programme, proposed the vote of thanks.Get Breaking news and Latest News from India and around the world on GlobalPunjabTV.net.
