Another Akali Dal emerges in Punjab

After being expelled from Shiromani Akali Dal, Rajya Sabha MP Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa today launched his new party which has been named Akali Dal (Democratic). With another party, the list of Shiromani Akali Dals have got more longer as there are already many parties under similar names like Shiromani Akali Dal Amritsar, Shiromani Akali Dal Badal and Shiromani Akali Dal Panthak.

Many see the latest party as a ploy of central BJP government to divide the votes of Sikhs as Dhindsa has a proximity with many big central BJP leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Even after his differences with Badals, central BJP leaders have been supporting him despite opposition by Badals, who have been alliance partner with BJP for last many years.

The closeness of Dhindsa with central BJP leaders can be gauged from the fact that last year central government conferred Padma Bhushan Award to him despite stiff opposition from Badals.

Apart from BJP, the proximity of Dhindsa with Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh is also an open secret. In political and bureaucratic circles of Punjab, its always well-known fact that Dhindsa has enjoyed power whether its SAD government in Punjab or congress. Even during present government, he has been preparing the ground for his political activity with tactful support of Punjab CM, who wants to cut the vote share of Badals by promoting Dhindsa as their parallel alternative.

Though Dhinsda and his new team have made big promises, but they will have to prove their seriousness to fulfil their promises by taking quick steps. Otherwise, they will also fade away with the passing of time.
