Chandigarh administration levies 5 per cent Covid cess on liquor

CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh administration on Thursday has decided to levy an additional 5 per cent Covid cess on all liquor bottles (over the minimum retail price) with immediate effect.

Punjab governor and UT administrator VPS Badnore gave the nod to Chandigarh municipal corporation to levy Covid cess on all categories of alcohol sold through wholesale licences.

The cess will be collected and remitted to the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation by the Excise and Taxation Department. “The cess will be kept in a separate account till a clarification is received on this from the Ministry of Home Affairs,” said an official.

Earlier, this month, the UT Administration imposed ‘cow cess’ while announcing the Excise policy for the year 2019-20.
