First Punjabi Theatre Female Actor Uma Gurbaksh Singh Dies At 93
AMRITSAR, MAY 23: Uma Gurbaksh Singh, the first Punjabi theatre actress and daughter of novelist Gurbaksh Singh Preetlari, passed away on Saturday morning at the age 93. Uma died due to a prolonged illness at her residence in Preet Nagar, Amritsar. When the Punjabi theatre was developing back in 1939, women were not ‘expected’ to act or be a part of the theatre plays. Then Uma Gurbaksh Singh became the first female actor to act in a Punjabi play. She was only 13 years old and the play was written by her father Gurbaksh Singh titled ‘Rajkumari Latika’. “During the nationalist movement, Uma actively headed protest plays. In 1944, she was put behind bars along with 7 other female artistes for staging the play ‘Hulle Hulare’ against the British rule in India,” shared Hirdaypaul Singh, younger brother of Uma Gurbaksh Singh and general secretary of Gurbaksh Singh Nanak Singh Foundation.
