FRANKFURT: The finance minister of Germany’s Hesse state, Thomas Schaefer, has killed himself over coronavirus crisis worries.
Thomas Schaefer’s body was found next to the train tracks near Germany’s financial centre Frankfurt.
Schaefer had been Hesse’s state finance minister for a decade.
Hesse’s Premier Volker Bouffier said Schaefer took the step after being worried about the financial fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.
“We are in shock, we are in disbelief and above all, we are immensely sad,” Bouffier said in a recorded statement.
Police and prosecutors said factors, including the questioning of numerous witnesses the situation on the scene and the technical and forensic evaluations and investigations, led them to conclude that Schaefer killed himself.
54-year-old Schaefer had been widely expected as a possible successor to Bouffier. He leaves behind a wife and two children.
