Even during the time of medical emergency, health department and other authorities have failed to prevent the supply of substandard and adulterated sanitizers. It has raised serious questions about tall claims of Punjab government.
The officers of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of Punjab had collected samples of sanitizers from various areas, but shockingly during testing, 95 per cent were found to be carrying methanol in it. Methanol is a chemical with the formula CH3OH. It is similar to that of ethanol. Since Methanol, can cause irritation to the eyes, skin and create serious respiratory problems, the health of users is at grave risk.
Medical experts say that the overexposure to methanol can also cause depression in the nervous system and even death also. More shockingly, more than 50 per cent samples did not have constituents as written on bottles. Many had water and other substances while many were found carrying lesser ethanol than mentioned.
Did You Know? Can drinking Methanol, Ethanol, or Bleach prevent or cure Coronavirus? The latest expose of FDA has confirmed that Punjab government authorities have failed to undertake timely checking of sanitizers to ensure the supply of high-quality sanitizers. After the spread of Covid-19, all residents have been using sanitizers at their homes, shops and other business establishments to protect themselves, but now they all must be apprehensive about the side effects of using such substandard sanitizers.
But even after getting reports about the supply of substandard sanitizers, authorities are yet to take any strict action nor have they launched any awareness campaign to spread information about the names of substandard sanitizers. Punjab government must act quickly to prevent more health problems in the state.
