Hockey icon Balbir Singh Sr is no more

CHANDIGARH: Legendary hockey player and Padma Shri awardee Balbir Singh Senior died today morning at the age of 95.

The three-time Olympic gold champion breathed his last at 6.00 am in a Mohali hospital.

Balbir Singh (Senior) is survived by three sons and a daughter.

One of the greatest hockey players of all time, Balbir Singh had been battling several age-related health problems for over two weeks. He was under ventilator support since May 12.

The veteran Olympian has played a key role in India’s win in London, Helsinki and Melbourne Olympics, Balbir Singh was born on October 10, 1924, at Haripur Khalsa village.

The world moaned the loss of the iconic hockey player.
