A tragedy in Texas. Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal shot and killed in the line of duty.
Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal made a traffic stop around near West Road in northwest Harris County around 1 pm Friday. During the stop, someone got out of the car and shot him twice in the back.
Dhaliwal was 10-year-veteran of the Houston department and held a special place in the community.
First Sikh Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal was a trailblazer
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said, “Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal, a 10-year veteran, was a hero, was a respected member of the community, and he was a trailblazer.”
“Dhaliwal was the first member of the Sikh community to become the Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputy. He wore a turban; he represented his community with integrity, respect and pride,” Gonzalez adds.

And that trailblazing even having an impact locally, the Sikh community quickly came together to remember Deputy Dhaliwal.
Meanwhile, the Sikh community centre of San Antonio paid tribute to Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal and the impact he made in the world.
The president of Sikh community centre of San Antonio, Balwinder Dhillon says Dhaliwal was a man rooted in unity.
“Sandeep Dhaliwal was not serving one community; he was serving everybody regardless of who they were. He was a role model for lots of youngsters, who were looking up to him,” Dhillon says.
Harris County deputy was the first to be allowed to keep his beard and wear his turban in uniform.
Dhaliwal was well known for giving his back and even leading a group of people to help Houston in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.
Investigators used Dhaliwal’s dashcam video to identify the alleged shooter. They found him near the crime scene roaming about half-an-hour before being arrested.
47-year-old Robert Solis is charged with capital murder of Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal. Further, a woman was also taken into custody as the deputies believe that she was a passenger in Solis’ car.
Within hours of learning the news of the shooting, Governor Greg Abbott issued a statement Friday expressing his condolences.
“This tragic loss is a grave reminder of risks that our law enforcement officers face every single day,” Abbott said.
“I thank the officers who bravely responded to apprehend the suspect…bring the killer to justice,” Abbott added.
Meanwhile, the 10-year veteran Dhaliwal is survived by his wife and three children.
