No doubt during the present scenario when Covid-19 has been spreading fast for last three months, the government must follow the advice of health authorities, but Indian government should not delay the opening of Kartarpur Corridor as Pakistan has already opened their side on Monday. Indian government had temporarily suspended the pilgrimage and registration on March after virus outbreak.
Pakistan government has opened their side after making the proper announcement as their foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi had two days back conveyed to Indian government their readiness to reopen the corridor on June 29. But Indian government authorities are still pondering and it officers are still busy in taking the opinion of their officers rather than making quickly required preparations.
The Kartarpur Gurdwara is in Pakistan’s Narowal district across the river Ravi. Its is the most revered place for Sikhs from across the globe as it is the final resting place of first Sikh master Guru Nanak, who had spent the last 18 years of his life in Kartarpur. It became a reality between India and Pak in November 2019 after a long wait. Apart from Sikhs, the Pilgrims of all faiths have been coming to Kartarpur from across the world after the opening of Corridor.
Since Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has the responsibility of taking up the religious issues of Sikhs, it must take up the matter with Indian government authorities to open its side to allow the pilgrim to visit Gurudwara Sahib. Apart from SGPC, the Punjab Member Parliaments must shun their political differences and help SGPC in raising the matter to highest level. Though Covid-19 is a big challenge, but authorities can make proper arrangements of health examination of all pilgrims before allowing them to visit Gurudwara, but there should not be any more delay.
