The latest 62 deaths in three districts of Punjab after drinking spurious liquor during the last two days has once against brought the nexus of politicians-smugglers back into focus. Though Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh has ordered a magisterial probe, but chorus for the judicial probe has been rising as everyone is well aware the lack of transparency in Magisterial probes when politicians of various parties are involved.
Residents of Amritsar, Batala and Tarn Taran districts have lost their lives since Wednesday night. It all started on July 29 when first five fatalities were reported from Mucchal and Tangra villages in Amritsar. Later on Thursday evening, two more people died under suspicious circumstances at Amritsar Muchhal village. One person died at Sri Guru Ram Das Hospital in Amritsar after being shifted from Tangra. The death toll is likely to increase in coming days as many more are feeling unwell and health department authorities have started tracing the victim of tragedy.
It’s an open secret that the liquor smugglers have connections with politicians of all parties and they start giving money to ruling party leaders during every government. Since officers do not have guts to challenge the politicians of the ruling party, they start following the directions of their political bosses. Same has been happening in present congress regime in Punjab and party leaders have been facilitating liquor smuggling by taking their share. Such a huge number of deaths is strong evidence to prove that liquor smuggling has been going on without any hurdle and smugglers have the support of police and civil administration officers.
Punjab CM must order judicial inquiry to expose the real culprits, who are behind the large scale smuggling. Otherwise, such more tragedies will take place in coming days.
