Need gender equality; seaperate toilets for women cops

Amid claims of Punjab government to provide all facilities to its women staff, the lack of required toilets for women cops has once again brought to fore the lack of basic amenities. It’s happening despite a huge publicity campaign by central and state government to make Swach Bharat Abhiyan a big success with it’s an implementation with complete transparency.

PM Narendra Modi and Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh and other authorities have been giving repeated calls and taking meetings of all senior officers to utilize the funds of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to construct toilets and provide other facilities.

But there are reports of corruption, delayed sanction to eligible and distribution of grant to ineligible beneficiaries. In many areas, after facing problems in getting sanctioned funds released,  the eligible beneficiaries have protested also in front of various offices. But every time the authorities have been making big claims of maintaining transparency.

The latest reports pointing towards lack of separate toilets for women cops have confirmed the allegations that there is something fishy in all process and requires the immediate attention of both central and state governments.

Like male cops, the female cops are also required to be on duty round the clock and they also deserve all basic facility as male cops have.  The Bureau of Police Research and Development has also recommended separate toilets for male and female staff and visitors and restrooms also.

But since the police force has remained a male bastion for a long time, things will take some more time to change. The last some years have seen the recruitment of a huge number of women cops, but the government failed to upgrade the facilities as per the recruitment of women in Punjab police.

If the Punjab government wants to provide the best police services to its residents, it must provide all facilities to its male and female staff to instil a sense of equality among them.
