Three days after President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to all the three contentious farm bills, despite stiff opposition from various opposition parties and hundreds of farmer unions, the political parties of Punjab are yet to show any sign of unity and still singing their different songs.
The three bills include – The Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020, The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Service Bill, 2020, and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill, 2020 and after the assent of President, these have now become Acts.
Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh presided over a meeting of representatives of 31 various farm unions and assured full support from his government to the agitation of farmers against all three Acts. Apart from supporting the agitation, CM also said that his government would challenge the Acts in Apex court of the country and also announced a special session of Vidhan Sabha to discuss the Acts.
But CM again criticized SAD for selling the farmers’ interests to large corporates to promote their petty political interests and alleged that SAD MLAs had chosen to stay away from the Vidhan Sabha session during which the resolution against the Farm Bills was passed.
Similarly, SAD Chief Sukhbir Badal in almost all meetings has been criticizing central congress leaders and Punjab CM for their failure to act timely against the latest Acts. To mobilize support for his party, Badal has been visiting various districts and addressing meetings.
Aam Aadmi Party leaders have also launched their own campaign and they are visiting various areas and getting the resolutions passed through Gram Sabhas of all villages.
But at the majority of meetings, the political leaders have been targeting their political opponents rather than offering any much-needed roadmap to take the fight of farmers to its logical conclusion. The political theatrics has multiplied the woes and disappointment of farmers and other residents. All political parties should get united against farm Acts and fight unitedly to save farming.
