KARACHI: A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight from Lahore crashed near the Karachi airport just a minute before landing this afternoon.
There were about 107 people on board and there are no reports on any survivors yet.
The flight was an Airbus A320, said reports in Pakistan media.
The plane went down in a residential area near Model Colony in Malir – just short of the Karachi airport.
Visuals by Pakistan media showed the wreckage and several houses in the area are on fire. Smoke could also be seen billowing in the sky.
“The plane crashed in Karachi. We are trying to confirm the number of passengers but initially it is 99 passengers and eight crew members,” the spokesman for the country’s aviation authority, Abdul Sattar Khokhar was quoted as saying by news agency AFP.
The crash comes just days after Pakistan resumed commercial flights.
Lahore and Karachi are about 1020 km apart and it takes about 7½ hours for a flight to cover the distance.
