Panicked Punjab government imposes section 144

Within sometime of giving relaxations, the Punjab government reversed its decision and ordered imposition of Section 144 to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Government has prohibited all gatherings above five people and given relaxation in wedding and Bhog ceremonies.

As per estimates of government, Covid cases may go up to 64,000 by September 3 and cross 1 lakh by September 15. Apart from cases, the number of deaths is also likely to increase over 1,500 by the first week of September.

Though infections remained under control in the state during lockdown and Punjab earned praise on the national level, but since the relaxations have been allowed, the number of positive cases has been increasing every day. The number of deaths has also been increasing sharply. Largely it’s happening because social distancing norms and other mandatory guidelines are not being followed by residents.

Though the number of deaths has already been scaring, but still there are many, who do not want to use a mask and follow the other guidelines despite the fact that Punjab government has increased penalties for all violations by residents.

The latest imposition of section 144 has come as authorities have been compelled because, during the last three-four days, the infections have increased sharply. Alone on Thursday, the state witnessed a single-day highest spike of 1,741 cases while in last around 11 days, the state has added 13,500 cases and 60 people have lost their lives.

Punjab government has been trying to terrorize state residents through strictness by imposing penalties, but still results are not coming as per expectations. Apart from strictness, authorities should also launch an intense awareness campaign to convince residents to follow mandatory guidelines to prevent the further spread of virus.
