OTTAWA: Punjab-origin Canadian politician Anita Anand has been appointed as Canada’s new Defence Minister in a Cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Anand is of Tamilian-Punjabi heritage as her father was from Tamil Nadu and her mother was from Punjab. She is the second woman to serve as Canada’s Defence Minister.
The 54-year-old, who will replace Indian-origin Harjit Sajjan, previously served as procurement minister and led the country’s efforts to purchase vaccines in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
