Sikh priest injured during an attack at gates of Gurdwara in New Zealand

CHRISTCHURCH: In a shocking incident, Bhai Gurpreet Singh, a Sikh priest, was injured in an attack by unidentified men at the gates of the Woolston Gurudwara in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Christchurch police are investigating the incident that happened at the Gurudwara Singh Sabha on Ferry Rd, Woolston about 6 am on Wednesday.

A post from the group’s Facebook said that the priest who comes everyday to do ‘parkash’ was confronted by some unidentified men at the gate and in the process, the sewadar suffered some injuries.

The New Zealand Sikh Society (South Island) Inc. (NZSS) reported the matter to the Police without any delay with a detailed statement and video surveillance of the incident was also handed over which clearly recorded the incident spanning just over a one minute period.

The video shows that a scuffle occurred for less than a minute before two of the men fled on foot into Woolston Park, which is opposite the building.

The other offender ran down the road.

During the attack, the victim suffered a fractured hand.

The New Zealand Sikh Society South Island is urging its members to be vigilant especially when it is dark.

On a Facebook post it said it is working with the Christchurch City Council to get more lighting near the gate of the Ferry Road Building.
