MADRID, MARCH 27: The number of deaths in Spain on Friday soared more than 4,800 as 769 people died from the coronavirus in a record one-day figure for fatalities, said the government.
After Italy, Spain has the world’s highest death toll with 4,858 deaths reported so far.
The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in the country has jumped to 64,059.
On March 14, Spain imposed a nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of the highly contiguous virus. The lockdown is set to be in place until at least April 14.
So far, Italy has registered 8,165 deaths from the deadly coronavirus with 80,539 people infected.
Meanwhile, the United States overtook Italy on Friday in the largest number of declared coronavirus cases. There are 85,991 people who have tested positive for the novel coronavirus in the US.
