UK Female Tourist Arrested For Wearing Bikini In Maldives

MALDIVES: A female tourist from UK was arrested from a non-resort island of Maafushi, Maldives for wearing a bikini.

A video of the same has gone viral on social media where the woman is seen struggling against the police officers, one of them is forcefully trying to cover her up with a beach towel.

In the video, the woman can be seen shouting in British accent, “You are sexually assaulting me.”

After the arrest of the woman, Maldives Police Service Commissioner Mohamed Hameed made a public apology.

“Incident in Maafushi in which our officers restrained a female tourist seems to be badly handled. I apologise to the tourist & the public for this. The challenge I have taken up is to professionalise the police service & we are working on that. This matter is being investigated,” Hameed wrote on Twitter.

It is, however, not illegal to wear bikinis on the island but it’s “strictly prohibited” in all areas other than in holiday resorts.
