US man threw hot coffee, hit Sikh clerk; arrested for hate crime

A man was arrested in California on hate crime charges after he hit a Sikh clerk and threw hot coffee on him, since he believed the victim was a Muslim, as per reports. Before fleeing, the man threw the hot coffee at the clerk them hit him in the face. The incident occurred around 2 am on Wednesday in Marysville. According to a Marysville Police Department, the Sikh clerk told officers that Crain had prepared himself a cup of coffee and attempted to leave without paying. In the CCTV footage, before being attacked, the Sikh man was seen confronting Crain at the front door. The police said that the victim suffered contusion on his face, and injuries from the hot coffee. Officers departed to the same store later that afternoon for another assault reported, and found a suspect walking away, matching the man’s description from the previous incident, police said. As per reports, the suspect, Crain was arrested. Police told that the suspect admitted he had attacked the clerk. He further told police that he “hated Muslims” and confronted the Sikh clerk, as he believed he was a Muslim. Crain was later booked into into Yuba County Jail for assault, hate crime and theft crimes. Condemning the attack, the Council on American-Islamic Relations and its allies from the Sikh community said, “We condemn this attack on an individual because of his faith. This hate crime represents yet another attack on our Sikh brothers and sisters fuelled by Islamophobia and those emboldened by this administration’s xenophobic policies and sentiments.” “We welcome the hate crime charges and encourage law enforcement to continue to take these clear incidents of bias seriously,” said CAIR-SV’s Civil Rights Attorney Saad Sweilem in a statement.
