NEW YORK: US President Donald Trump on Friday said he was planning to sign an executive order as soon as Saturday banning Chinese-owned short-video app TikTok from the country.
Trump said this aboard Air Force One as he returned to Washington after a fundraising trip to Florida. He further said he did not support a deal involving TikTok and Microsoft.
Earlier, Trump’s re-election campaign ran ads on Facebook claiming that ByteDance-owned TikTok was “spying” on users. “
TikTok is spying on you…TikTok has been caught red-handed by monitoring what is on your phone’s clipboard,” one of the ads said.
The ads linked to a survey that asked users whether TikTok should be banned in the US.
Besides, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the United States was “certainly looking at” banning Chinese social media apps, including TikTok.
