WASHINGTON: The US is now the new epicenter of global coronavirus pandemic with over 104,000 confirmed cases.
According to Johns Hopkins University tracker, more than 104,000 people were infected with coronavirus in the United States early on Saturday with over 1,700 deaths.
With increased number of cases, US President Donald Trump on Friday said that the nation would produce 100,000 ventilators in 100 days.
Pledging to take care of US needs while also helping other countries, Trump said, “We’re going to make a lot of ventilators.”
Trump said he had named White House aide Peter Navarro as the coordinator of the Defense Production Act.
There was a chance the US would not require that many ventilators to fight the coronavirus outbreak, said Trump adding that the US would then help other countries in need.
Meanwhile, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday cleared a new rapid test for detecting coronavirus from Abbott Laboratories.
The laboratories says the test can detect the novel coronavirus in about 5 minutes.
Medical device maker Abbott on Friday night announced the emergency clearance of its cartridge-based test.
The test delivers a negative result in 13 minutes when the virus is not detected, says the company.
